Common Motor Oil Legends and Myths

While almost any driver can tell you what oil does, how often it needs to be replaced, etc., there is still a great deal of misinformation out there regarding motor oil. Different industry sources, as well as the free flow of information on the internet, have led to some pretty wild rumors starting. Here are a few of the more common motor oil legends and myths.

Often times drivers will claim that dark motor oil means that the oil needs to be changed. That is simply untrue. While the color of motor oil can show it is burnt and worn, this usually comes with a reddish hue. Dark black oil is generally running correctly and should be left alone until it reaches the refill line.
